Interview With A Sex Toy Tester: Tim Larson’s Journey

In 2016, he transformed his small hobby into a professional career, co-founding My Sex Toy Guide with his wife, Sandra, becoming a leading voice in the industry and a champion for body-safe pleasure. Recently, he launched a new book, How To Become A Sex Toy Tester (available on Amazon Kindle), and introduced a new product line, now available on their website.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Tim to hear about his interesting journey. Will we finally learn if this job is as exciting as it sounds? Find out in my interview with a professional sex toy tester!

Rachel Sommer: Tim, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Could you tell us a bit about your journey and how you became a professional sex toy tester?

Tim Larson: Thanks for having me, Rachel. My journey began is college when I first started using sex toys, but it wasn’t until 2016 that I decided to make my hobby into a professional career. This was when my wife, Sandra, and I started My Sex Toy Guide to share our experiences and help others find the right products for their needs.

Rachel Sommer: That’s fascinating! What inspired you to create My Sex Toy Guide?

Tim Larson: We saw a gap in the market for honest, detailed product reviews. Many articles on the Internet were either too clinical or lacked real user experience. We wanted to create a resource that combined professional insights with personal anecdotes to make the information more relatable and helpful.

Rachel Sommer: Your reviews are indeed very thorough. Can you walk us through your process of testing a new sex toy?

Tim Larson: Absolutely. When we receive a new product, we closely inspect the packaging and the product itself. We look for any potential issues with materials or construction. Then, our full-time team of sex toy testers uses the product and provides their written feedback, allowing us to get a wide range of opinions and experiences. We consider factors like ease of use, noise levels, and overall satisfaction. For instance, we might test a vibrator’s battery life and measure its noise level in a quiet room. We also test it in various positions and settings to see how versatile it is. After a few weeks of testing, we compile our findings into a detailed review.

Rachel Sommer: It sounds like many hours go into each review. How do you ensure that your reviews remain unbiased and trustworthy?

Tim Larson: Maintaining trust with our readers is priority number one. We’re always transparent about our testing process and highlight when a product was provided for free by a manufacturer. However, we never let a free sample influence our opinions. If a product doesn’t meet our standards, we’re honest about it in our articles and videos. We aim to provide our readers with the best possible information to make informed purchase decisions.

Rachel Sommer: Your website also covers a lot of educational material. Why do you think this topic is so important?

Tim Larson: Sex education is often lacking, especially for topics like sex toys and sexual health. We want to fill that gap by providing accurate, accessible information. Our sex guides aim to empower our readers to explore their sexuality safely and confidently.

Rachel Sommer: What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?

Tim Larson: One of the biggest challenges is the stigma surrounding sex toys and sexual wellness in general. For example, promoting our content on mainstream platforms like YouTube and Instagram can be difficult. We solved this issue by building a supportive community and using as many channels as possible, such as Google Search, Social Media, or our popular newsletter.

Rachel Sommer: How has the industry changed since you started, and what trends do you see on the horizon?

Tim Larson: The industry has grown leaps and bounds since we started. Thankfully, there’s been a shift towards more inclusive and body-safe products, which is fantastic. We’re also seeing a lot of cool new technology, with products becoming more innovative and customizable. AI is starting to play a role, of course, offering personalized recommendations and enhancing user experiences.

Rachel Sommer: You mentioned launching your own product line. Can you tell us about the challenges you faced in product development and the inspiration behind this new venture?

Tim Larson: Developing our own products was both exciting and challenging. One of the main challenges was ensuring our products met the highest safety and quality standards. For example, we extensively researched and tested to find the best materials and designs. Our inspiration was always our readers. We want to offer products that we can fully stand behind and that reflect the needs and preferences of our loyal audience. We listened to their feedback and added their suggestions to our designs. You can say it was a team work effort!

Rachel Sommer: That’s exciting to hear. Do you have any advice for someone looking to become a sex toy tester?

Tim Larson: Absolutely! Start by exploring different products to find out what you enjoy. Build a platform, whether a blog, YouTube channel, or social media presence, and share your honest experiences. Networking with other reviewers and manufacturers can also open up opportunities. My new book, How To Become A Sex Toy Tester, will also be a big help *wink wink*.

Rachel Sommer: Great advice! Finally, what’s next for you and My Sex Toy Guide?

Tim Larson: We’re always looking to enhance our content and reach. We’re currently working on a series of in-depth guides and planning to launch a podcast to discuss sex toys and sexual wellness topics more interactively. Our goal is to continue being a trusted resource for our readers and help them navigate their sexual wellness journey with ease. Additionally, we’ve recently launched our own product line, which is available on our website, and my new book, How To Become A Sex Toy Tester, is now available on Amazon Kindle.
